Government Grants for Elderly Care to be Cut

 23rd Sep 2019

Yet again the news headlines talk about the scandal of government grants for Elderly Care being cut, and that there is a North / South divide in how care funding is being allocated.

In the South of England around 60 % of older people receive care which is privately funded, mostly due to the steep increase in the value of the homes they own. In the north it is the opposite – more people are state funded than privately funded, so it follows that they will be very much hit by the removal of state grants for elderly care.

Whether you live in the North or the South the sad fact is, that if people who fund their own care were introduced to properly functioning and managed live-in care, they would save money in the long run and could stay safely in their own homes.

What are fees for live in care currently like?

In the south, care home fees currently hover around £1,200 per week. We would suggest that Care Quality Commission regulated companies can even fund people who are state funded in a far more cost-effective way than by placing older folk in care homes.

What we really need in the UK is to have forward thinking commissioning, supported by a robust quality control programme, this would remove the threat to the safety of our elderly population caused by unregulated companies, who often use self-employed carers, arriving in the UK the day before they start work, and who receive little or no training before being thrown into a position of trust with no support or guidance.

How can Arbour Care help?

At Arbour Companions and Care we carefully select and assign our carers during the client assessment stage. Inviting a new person into your home can require a small level of adjustment; however, our Live In Carers are trained to adapt to your timetable and lifestyle, ensuring that you remain in control and feel comfortable in your own home. We would never place a Carer into your home that you did not feel completely at ease with.

We have the utmost confidence in our Carers because we train and develop their abilities to ensure nothing but the best Live In Care service is offered, whilst also employing a qualified, professional assessor to supervise and manage their work.

We take very good care of our carers as the work they do is deserving of recognition and respect.
